Post #19: The Day Ended Well Considering All

Good evening,

Just a note to let you know that Anita rounded out the day in relatively good spirits and we were able to share some laughs and even giggles that Mother and I occasionally indulge in. It was good to hear her laughing and to join in it with her. Just goes to show what a tremendous spirit she has. And the laughter came even after we had watched (another old film) "I'll Cry Tomorrow" (starring Susan Hayward, Jo Ann Fleet and Eddie Albert) about the life story of Lilian Roth which was anything but rosy but which ended on an upbeat note.

After Anita's nap this morning , she awoke in the early afternoon refreshed and requested rice with butter, a little sugar, and some iced tea. Right before the movie she ate cheddar and swiss cheese slices and some Granny Smith apple slices and took a sip of red wine.

She had some different pains today, pains which actually started out low key yesterday but increased today. There are what feel like to her new lumps on her sides below the armpit area that have a burning sensation to them as well as a little pain on her left side under her ribs. There is also what she describes as "a new lump" on her front rib cage on the left side that is a bit painful. In general today, she has had a burning sensation in her abdomen but nothing as bad as the pain she was experiencing before the first chemo treatment. Tonight, as a preventative measure more than as a reaction to current pain levels, she took some morphine drops. She did this last night and it enabled her to sleep through until morning.

So we have ended today on a more positive note and that is indeed a good thing.

Hi Mom & Melissa,

I'm sorry to hear of new pain locations happening for you, Mom, which have to be hard to bear! So glad you are there, Melissa, to add some cheer--old movies are good for that, too.

A few impressions so far from Napa Valley: Nicholas has been aglow with the sights and society he finds here, LOVED the catering job at the Hans Fadden winery just north of Calistoga, a merry wedding party full of young arts & musician types, just his thing.

Come 10 pm, after the job, he rendered himself at Gayle & Alex's All Seasons Bistro where, as she had promised, Gayle wrote him a check for his labors, which, directly across the road at the Dierkheising's second eaterie, the Hydro Grill, Nick promptly cashed, spending there part of his proceeds plus the remainder of a hopping night listening to live music and socializing with many of the wedding party, who had reconvened there to extend the festivities.

Meantime, I of course had driven south to Yountville to enjoy the slendor of Daune & Howard's spread amid the grape vines--a gorgeous home!--fine food for noshing (Robbie's roasted red peppers, Daune's homemade lemon cake, local cheeses and coldcuts, varietal wines and such) and old(er) familiar faces many of whom had not laid eyes one upon the other in a good twenty years. Those eyes were wide as we took in the sights of so many long-time-no-see party-goers: Laura Hoover looking lovely as the day (the weather was perfect, by the way); Daune a-shimmer in pearly whites and silvers, head to shining toes, Robbilee not a bit changed, warm, smiling wide as ever, and eager to chat; hugs to go round there for all in abundance.

Early on I saw, drawn to mine as were mine to his, an unfamiliar pair of the bluest eyes ever, just waiting to land the right moment for introductions: I should've guessed that was your Jody. What a wonder he is: exuberant, spilling just the right amount of well-guaged gush about you once we met--the man adores you, Mom, to pieces.

Everyone, between hellos and look-at-yous! offered a sweet and caring thought about you, Mom, regretting your absence, wishing so much to know that you'll be better soon. Lewis & Roseanne, Robert, Celia, Betty Anne Prien, Charlene and all were to my best assessment enjoying themselves wholly.

John too. He carried, hanging on its wire from his curled grip, an 8x10 framed picture of you two together for half the evening, showing you off, wishing you were there. As did we all.

Nick, Gayle, Alex and I stayed up till the wee hours sipping wine in this cozy house (where I'm composing this report for you now). In a few hours we'll head to the opening. No doubt I'll be sending you another missive soon with more "impressions."

Wishing you both a bright and better day, with love.

Marcia

Sorry about your new pains, Anita, but glad to hear that you can still laugh. You're my idol.
Fun to read Marci's account of the festivities in Napa. Almost as good as being there.
I have a feeling you can't wait for John to return so that you can get his first-hand report. In the meantime keep on keeeping your spirit up. We are so many who love you.
Love, Fritzie
